Ram Gopal Varma- Talking about ‘Phoonk’

Today while coming across through MSN I found an interview of Ram Gopal Varma about the success of his latest released movie ‘Phoonk’.

While giving the interview Ramu said that the film has broken the fallacy that without a song and without a star a film can’t work in Box Office. Following are some parts of the discussions with Ram Gopal Varma-

Q. Ramu, did you do black magic in theaters which helped fetch audience for 'Phoonk'?

[Laughs] Well, let that be a mystery! What I can see though is that industry seems to be in a state of shock with the success of the film. They were not really hoping that a film like 'Phoonk' would actually fetch a 100% opening across the country.

Q. What do you feel is so shocking about the way Phoonk has performed at the box office?

First and foremost it has broken the fallacy that films with no stars and songs can't work at the box office. So many in the industry are shocked because we have constantly lived under this impression that a film can be a success only if there are big stars, item songs and comedy ingredients. Now tomorrow if someone says this, 'Phoonk' can be clearly looked as an exhibit because isme naa comedy thi, naa gaane, naa hi stars!

Q. But stars can't be discounted, isn't it?

No way can they be discounted. But then how many saleable stars do we have? 10-12 maybe! In how many films can they act in a year? Perhaps 20 or 25! Now Bollywood needs at least 120 movies to be churned out every year to keep the distributors and exhibitors running. So who acts in these remaining 100 odd movies? You need to have an alternate mechanism in place. This is where the subject matter comes in. You may not have stars but then you should have a subject which is good enough for an audience to be enticed enough to walk into theaters, just like Phoonk did.

Q. You would still continue to make films with stars as well as newcomers, isn't it?

That's exactly the point. It is the subject which warrants whether you need stars for them or not. I would have films with star power and also actors like Sudeep (lead actor in 'Phoonk') who fit into the character definition. See, if you go to a DVD library, so many times you pick a DVD if the three line synopsis on the cover excites you enough. The film may not boast of known names but the subject could be interesting enough. Hollywood has realized that and is quickly moving in that direction where it is not being dependent on stars any more. Bollywood too can be seen going in the same direction.

Some interesting quotes of Bollywood

Read the following quotes once said by bollywood’s top celebrities-

"I think every artist would want to connect with the people. We survive because of them and we are here because of their patronage. It is important for us to know what they think about us. The only interaction we had in the past was when we went to public forums" – Amitabh Bachchan on the intentions of his blog

"Both of us had cameos in Mani Ratnam's 'Guru'. People still talk about our romantic scene in the rain (including a kiss). And now the Airtel ads. It's unbelievable how much chemistry people have seen between us in those few seconds. I always say it's the moments that make a romance"– Vidya Balan on Madhavan

"Our young generation is health conscious and I don't agree with this statement. You have to be practical and realistic. You don't have to be addicted to anything. Any addiction is bad for health" – Hrithik Roshan on the importance of a healthy lifestyle

"Bachchan has been in the film industry over over 35 years and he is the real king. There are many who are around for 15-20 years and like to call themselves king. There is only one king and he is Amitabh Bachchan" - Akshay Kumar

"I think what's fantastic is when you have this incredible friendship with your man. I think that's what really holds real, and that's the best part of us together. I mean of course there's the love and all of that, but I won't get into those clichés with all of you" - Aishwarya Rai, on her life after marriage

"I don't think of films and performances as a marathon race. I truly enjoy my work. And I'm too selfish as an actor to care what other actors are doing. But I do need competent co-stars to give back to me what I give them in a shot " - Kajol on her competition in Bollywood

“Katrina and I don’t talk to each other”- Bipasha Basu

Latest Bollywood’s two renowned actresses Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif don’t talk to each other. Remember just few months back both the actresses shared screen spaces together in ‘Race’.

Is it true or simply a gossip? When asked to Bipasha she replied "Yes there is a problem between Katrina and me. But there could be reasons for that. It could be because of our boyfriends (John Abraham and Salman Khan) but that never affected our work. We didn't speak during Race but that never stopped shooting," she explains. Well, at least she is honest!

Earlier Bipasha Basu also had some problems with another Bollywood’s top actress Kareena Kapoor. Bipasha also has answer for that "Kareena and I had a problem so many years back that today I don't even remember today what it was. I don't know Kareena as a person but today I can say openly I don't have any problems with her. People then created an awkwardness and with constant repetition the problem got aggravated but I hold no grudges. She's a wonderful actress."

She claims that if she met Kareena at a social event, she could greet her cordially. But the same cannot be said for Katrina. "No, I can't do that with Katrina. There is an awkwardness between Katrina and me. We don't talk to each other," she admits.

Priyanka Chopra plays a role of Warrior

After Abhishek Bachchan it’s now Priyanka Chopra who will play a role of warrior in the movie ‘Sonia’. So Abhishek is now not only the sole warrior of Bollywood’s mega budget action film ‘Drona’.

Anaita Shroff has designed priyanka's look and her make-up man is The Mickey Contractor for the movie says, “Goldie knew what he wanted and the look has turned out to be just that.”

Piggy Chops is going the Akki way as she is shown sporting a pagdi in Drona, “I’m wearing a pagdi but we didn’t want it to have a complete Indian look so we used leather texture. The outfit is made of chiffon and we have used a waist-coat too,” says Priyanka.

Priyanka had to learn Sikh Martial arts Gatka for her warrior role. She said “The two daggers are what I fight with and I had to learn to use them.”

Well Priyanka sure looks hot as a warrior because her last act of Zeisha from Love Story 2050 was complete trash.
